Jayne was up early and like each morning, she walked lazily to the kitchen to have coffee. She loved the ritual of using a French press and preferred it iced on warmer days with extra cream. However, she hated having to wait for it to cool down and prepared a slice of multigrain toast. As she put the steamy cup of fresh coffee into the refrigerator and turned around, the chaos from her children echoed in the dining room. Thumping footsteps on the wooden floor beneath her and laughter filled the air. Her days were filled with mindless activities surrounding her boy’s routines, arts & crafts projects and never ending trips to the park.

At that moment she decided to ditch the coffee and her AM routine. She filled her water bottle and checked in with nanny. A hike alone that morning actually sounded exactly like what she needed. The nanny agreed and took the kids to the park for her. She grabbed her headphones, a ball cap and headed for the door before the kids would notice she slipped out.

The drive was easy as the breeze blew through her long brown hair with the window down. She admired the many mansions built into the hillside along the way. About forty five minutes later she pulled onto a bumpy dirt road off the main route. She travelled another several miles until reaching a parking lot with a reasonable amount of traffic. “Nice,” Jayne said sarcastically to herself out loud, it was busier than she had hoped. Stay positive, she thought. “I’m sure I will be able to find a nice spot in the shade alone to do some stretching.”

She applied her sunscreen and UV lip balm thoroughly. She tossed her backpack on, sure to include her water bottle and locked her car. When she stepped away from the vehicle she always made a point to check out her surroundings, the trail map and suddenly felt like everyone was staring at her. A strange twinge of paranoia set over her. It was probably just in her head. No one cared, she was just overreacting and being self centered, thinking everyone’s eyes were on her, she thought. “Who am I kidding,” she said to herself. The woman behind her was just waiting politely for her turn to look at the map and those other folks were patiently waiting for the restroom. She reminded herself that it was the wildlife she needed to watch for. Large predators had been sighted in the area recently, as the signed posted next to trail head had warned.

She headed in the direction with the best view. She had not run this trail yet, but laced up her shoes extra tight and turned on some of her favorite music, jazz, and set off. She passed a family group with small children, politely thanking them for moving out of the way, on her behalf. As she pounded the dirt to the beat of the music, she could feel her pulse kick up and then stabilize as she got into that all familiar rhythm of long distance running she loved so much. The way her body did exactly as she told it to do so many times before. She was in tune with her breath and her movements traveling along with ease. A short time later she stopped for some water, the sun beating down on her face. She noticed an older man sitting alone on a wooden bench. She wondered why he would be on his phone in such a beautiful forest, not realizing if she even had cell service out here herself. She ran on for another mile.

Up a hill now, her pace slowed to steady hike. She removed her headphones and stopped to listen to nature, taking in all the pleasant sounds around her. She sat down on a small rock ledge and thought she saw something moving in the trees about 300 yards away. She stared intently and waited for a solid five minutes until someone on a mountain bike rode down quickly beside her. Dirt and dust leaped from the ground and filled her eyes and lungs as they sped by. “Woah!” She said as Jayne jumped back in shock and then wiped off her face with her own t-shirt and continued on up the hill. “I’m sure I saw an animal, perhaps it was a deer,” she said. “Oh, well.” The trail was much too busy today for anything terrible to happen without someone noticing and coming to help within a reasonable amount of time, she thought. She reassured herself, she was just on edge today because she had broken her routine and needed this time to relax. Why couldn’t she just relax, she thought?

After summiting the peak on the trail, her decent took her to a wonderful open valley and a full view of the range ahead. She picked a few wildflowers of several colors along the way, creating a small bouquet to carry home. As the trail switched back and the valley was behind her, she walked a steady pace through the thick forest of aspen trees. The trees were so dense, she felt dizzy and delighted at the same time. She stopped to stretch a short distance off the path. She didn’t want another mountain biker to run into her while her focus was elsewhere. “This is perfect,” she said.

Jayne turned her headphones up and closed her eyes, taking her time with her practice. She often enjoyed a deep breath and pressing into her leg stretches, taking them farther each time to release tension. As she went to inhale, her breath was masked by something. Her eyes went dark and strong hands, several hands, covered her body! She tried to scream, but nothing came out. She was pulled to ground with force and fainted.

When she regained consciousness she was in complete shock. She had been taken, but to where, she wasn’t sure. Am I still in the forest, but what part, she thought? She was groggy and realized her hands were bound in front of her at the wrists. Her ankles too, were wrapped in leather rope. Panic flooding her mind, sweat beading from her face and nape in this shaded spot. She began to throw her body around violently. Now on her stomach, as she went to bring her hands closer to her mouth to gnaw at the ties, she couldn’t, she had been gagged. Heart pounding from her chest, she thought, “I never should have come alone!”

As all her senses slowly returned, she noticed she was lying on a soft white cotton blanket in a grassy clearing among the pines. She tried to regain her internal navigation. There was a wooden picnic basket set off to the side of the blanket and a pillow where her head had been before she flipped over. It was only then, that she noticed a pair of boots just near the basket.
